End Child Poverty Coalition responds to government’s Tackling Child Poverty Strategy publication
Following the publication of the government’ strategy to Tackle Child Poverty, the End Child Poverty Coalition have issued the following quotes;
Joseph Howes, CEO of Buttle UK and Chair of the End Child Poverty Coalition said;
“For too long, children growing up in poverty have been pushed to the margins of government decision-making. The new Tackling Child Poverty Strategy signals a long-overdue change of direction, committing to lift 550,000 children out of hardship. In particular by ending the two-child limit — a policy which pulled families into poverty — the government has taken a decision that will fundamentally improve the futures of children across the country. This progress matters, but it cannot be the end point. We urge the government to raise its level of ambition, because no child in the UK should have to grow up in poverty.”
Sophie, a Youth Ambassador for the End Child Poverty Coalition, aged 22 said;
“I am very aware of the realities of child poverty. It is not being able to concentrate in school because you’ve not seen your Mam eat in days. It is thinking you deserve the mould in your bedroom and broken school shoes. It is not having aspirations because it feels absolutely impossible in your community. The publication of the Tackling Child Poverty Strategy begins to recognise the struggles that families in poverty face. I hope this is just the beginning of a reality where no child grows up in poverty and experiences the suffocating barriers it creates.”
