COALITION WELCOMES CROSS PARTY CALL FOR PLAN TO END CHILD POVERTY

The Government’s response to the Children’s Commissioner-led cross party call that Politicians must take child poverty out of the ‘too difficult box’ and come up with a big, bold plan to fix it must be to put children and ending child poverty at the heart of the recovery from the pandemic. There is an urgent need, a big opportunity and a clear duty on all of us to transform the lives of children and their futures. It will take political willing and an action plan that’s based on what works. And this work must start with the March Budget scrapping the planned cut to Universal Credit in April.

Regardless of political stance, we can all agree on what a good childhood looks like: having enough food to eat; somewhere safe to live; the chance to fully participate in school;  pursuing passions; and building ambitions for a successful future.

Yet, the pandemic is worsening what was already a child poverty crisis. It threatens to pull even more children away from the childhood they deserve, and cuts more families adrift. Without action, we risk increasing the gap in opportunity and achievement between low income families and those better off.
